Students from SoDA of the Manipal University of Dubai had taken a part in this inter-university competition organized by @Light.Func.
From the title of the competition, Light.Ication, was derived from the idea of light design through education. The inter-university competition was with the participation of the students, architects and light designers. The organizers used (The Year of Zayed) as a name for the exhibition that accompanied the competition.
Founded by Sakina Dugawalla (Design Director & Founder @Light.Func) aims to encourage mentorship & creativity through the peer lighting design community in opening the eyes of university students on the creative and technical characteristics of lighting design. Experienced Lighting Design studios act as mentors in giving their time to create the installations with students, putting the whole industry up for a session of fun, stress, creative input and off course, collaboration.
The theme for Light.ication v3.0, in line with the national theme of the UAE, will honor the Year of Zayed. As people of the country commemorate the memory of the founding father of the UAE, participants will be required to use the Light.ication initiative to showcase the impact of his legacy and promote the values that he displayed through his livelihood. In line with the many values that drive the year of Zayed, the most significant of these was Sheikh Zayed’s belief that investing in people’s knowledge and capabilities would result in the greatest dividends for society.
The students found this competition as a nice experience, they were able to work with the industry, talk to various people in the field. They also got to see how light can create such an impact and can be used in plenty of forms and ways. Throughout this experience, the students learned to work as a team and coordinate among members and overall had lots of fun putting together the installation.
