Converting Waste to Art at DP World Tour Championship

What’s it all about?

Converting Waste to Art  was an interesting, yet challenging event that took place at DP World by the name “DP World Tour Championship”. This was a project done by 20 students of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dubai, along with the assistance of their professor, Mr. Shaji Panicker, where they were required to re-use VOSS water bottles, by putting together a 5m scale model of the iconic Burj Khalifa all in a span of 3 days, from the 15th, 16th and 17th of November. According to Uttara Nagarajan, “Voss bottles approached us. The basic point was that every year people drink water and they just throw these empty bottles and litter the place. The main aim was to recycle these bottles and do it in a very innovative way of making so, they thought of making a replica of Burj Khalifa. So, it was just given to our university and our class got this project. The whole model was to be scaled down to 5 meters. We started with securing the bottle caps to the board and then, we stacked the remaining bottles in layers. Most of the structural work was done in university, in the workshops. We took the parts to the site and we fixed them there on the spot. It took us about 3 days to finish this entire project. For the final touch ups, we put up LED lights on the board, just to give it the effect.”

“It’s 5 meters tall and we have used more than 1,000 Voss bottles that were collected on the spot for the 3 days event.”

Further kinds of opportunities

Students being given the opportunity to attend and participate such events not only gives them the chance to bond with their peers, but learn in the most fun way possible. With adequate guidance and amazing team spirit, these students can fly high and persevere to work on better projects in the industry, marking important milestones as they move up the ladder of success.
