A Cup of Turkish Tradition

The Turkish culture is a combination of various cultures.

Culture in itself is carried out to different parts of the world for others to experience it. Abdul Hamid Awad Muhammed Awad is one among them who provides a fabulous journey for the UAE residents by stimulating the buyers and reducing tiredness during the day, all through a cup of his traditionally prepared Turkish coffee.

The title for the second best in the UAE National Coffee Championship was awarded to him. The uniqueness of this coffee truly stands out.

Abdul Hamid Awad has been practicing the art of making and serving traditional coffee with his dad since he was eight years old and has continued the practice of his culture in Bur Dubai near Fahidi by serving the people with a variety of coffee.

Coffee preferences range from essences of rosewater tea, cardamom. Spicy flavoured traditional Turkish coffee is a large hit among the residency of Bur Dubai.

Abdul Hamid Awad is very passionate about his work and has been pursuing his job for more than 50 years. He believes in the magic of his coffee.

He believes that there isn’t a specific time for serving a cup of hot Turkish coffee. The place in which he serves coffee has an intimate atmosphere which is comforting and soothing to the eyes and minds of the many visitors who approach the coffee-maker.  The coffee hub is also a museum which displays all sorts of Egyptian coffee pots which are engraved with Qura’anic verses.

The coffee museum is owned by Mr. Khalid Al Mulla, and all items here are of his collection. The objects showcased are assembled over the years from all around the globe which are his personal collections. He says the museum is an element which connects the past of the coffee to its present with which he incorporates live demonstration of coffee rituals from Ethiopia. This includes the Arabic Bedouin, Levant and specially the Turkish version.

As one digs, one discovers interesting history of the bean”, says Mr. Hamid.

Turkey’s coffee culture is one of its most fascinating elements of Turkish cultural heritage. The coffee is prepared in pure sand to retain and capture its real, true flavor.

The coffee is a blend of high quality Arabic coffee beans which has been originated from Brazil and Central America. The beans are roasted, finely ground, boiled in copper coffee pots and cooked using sand which is termed as ‘Khahve’ in Turkish language. The coffee is served in clear, tulip-shaped traditional cups with a designed handle to recreate the ones used in ancient times.

Because, the drink is known to be bitter and harsh on the palette, it is served with Turkish sweets which are picked from its wide range of delicacies. The place is open from 9AM-5PM, Sunday to Thursday (closed every Friday).  Prices are largely dependent on type of coffee bean used and flavor infused.

Abdul Hamid says it is the viscosity, unique flavor and the small cup of Turkish coffee which sets it above the rest.
