ChemFest; A Take on All Things Scientific

The ChemFest hosted by the Chemical Department from the School of Engineering and IT was held from on the 5th of November.
Inclusive of 3 workshops, the festival was targeted towards school students.
A majority of whom are currently studying in Grade 12.
The interest shown towards this workshop by the students who attended were of an increased value as most of them were in specialized streams which involved some aspect of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Some of the attendees included students from Cambridge International, GEMS Modern and DPS Sharjah.
The main motive of this festival was to provide the students with an insight into the Chemical Department.
The workshops respectively called- ‘Aspen Plus’ – (A Simulation Program), ‘Organic Lab’ and ‘Mass Transfer Lab’.
The workshops held were the epitome of all things modern and scientific.
Students who attended the workshop were entertained at the variety of things that the School of Engineering and IT gave them a chance at participating in.
The first workshop- ‘Aspen Plus’; was a simulation program.
It is a handy software which can be used for a wide variety of chemical engineering tasks such as, simulating reaction engineering scenarios, such as designing and sizing reactors, predicting reaction conversions and much more. The basics of Aspen Plus were taught to the students.
The ‘Organic Lab’ workshop gave students a chance to deal with chemical reactions and processes. The students showed great interest in this workshop as they were able to deal with the chemical processes by themselves under supervision.
The third workshop- ‘Mass Transfer Lab’; focused on processes like distillation columns, membrane filtration, absorption, evaporation and so forth. The basics and process of these mechanisms were taught and shown to the eager students.
Hosts of ChemFest mainly aimed at sharing ideas with the students by making the sessions interesting and interactive. They were very successful in doing so.
